Space Exploration

Humankind has always been wondering about space. We could truly change our view of space when we see planet Earth from above.

Marco Castronuovo showed astonishing pictures of our planet and said that only when you see Earth from space, you will realize the space you have been living all your life is very limited.

He mentioned some of the great achievements in space exploration and said that he wanted to be an astronaut. Marco applied for the Italian astronaut selection process and went through all the psychological and medical tests. He was a very successful candidate as he made it to the last 12 people.

It is important to be inspired and to set high targets!

Soon after that personal story, which inspired the audience, Marco Castronuovo talked about some space missions and gave special importance to Rosetta and ExoMars.

Why should we go to Mars?

Mars is very similar to Earth and its surface has a great morphological variety – mountains, valleys, etc. Another very important thing is that liquid water appears to flow from some steep, relatively warm slopes on the Martian surface.

Castronuovo shared some very interesting facts about ExoMars. Firstly, it consists of two missions which are expected to take place in 2016 and 2018. The first mission includes a satellite and EDL Demonstration Module. The second one will be a mission with a Rover. The goal is to do a research, in order to find evidence of present or past life.

Italy has a great contribution to the project: EDM module, Ma_Miss, the autonomous experiment DREAMS and last but not least the drill. Marco Castronuovo concluded his amazing lecture with a video about Mars One.
