Small Satellites Galore!

In one of the most exciting and informative events of the program so far, Prof. Rick Fleeter of Brown University and La Sapienza University gave an enlightening lecture on microspace, and the concept of designing small, cheap satellites for personal use.

He talked about the almost complete lack of space infrastructure, and the need to re-architect space systems in order to advance exponentially the small-scale exploration of space. Prof. Fleeter described the extensive infrastructure on Earth and stressed that the comforts we enjoy everyday are the tip of the infrastructure iceberg. How is it possible that there are five times redundant GPS systems around the World, but no GPS in space?

Prof. Fleeter talked about how currently 90% of the effort and cost of space missions is making sure the payload survives, and only 10% is dedicated to the actual mission, and how this overhead could be reduced significantly by introducing space infrastructure. He suggested that space should turn from a Frontier to a Settlement, and be explored more vigorously. After the talk there was a long Q&A session with the Cadets and guests.
