Science of the Moon – Looking For Water, Surface Mapping and Charging

Dwarf Stars and Exoplanets – Are We Alone?

Dr. Andrew Jordan, a researcher at the University of New Hampshire gave the second Space Science lecture. He talked about the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter – a NASA spacecraft that orbits the Moon in order to survey its surface and environment. In his engaging lecture, Dr. Jordan described the building, integrating, and launching of the LRO spacecraft. He gave an overview of the scientific instruments on LRO and the fantastic results they have produced – such as mapping the surface of the Moon to a sub-meter resolution, finding recent craters, and cataloging the flat and steep regions of our natural satellite for future landing sites using laser altimetry. He talked about his own research – studying the surprising effects of charging the surface soil by solar protons and electrons, such as light sparks and the soil grain fragmentation it causes.
