Mars500

Diego Urbina was a member of the the 520-day isolation crew of the Mars500 study. He finished post-mission medical and psychological data collection that followed crew recovery for six months after the Mars500 mission. At the same time, he worked on the final report and took part in other post-mission activities. European crewmembers were based at ESA’s technical centre ESTEC, Netherlands until the Mars500 mission ended for Diego in May 2012.

Diego talked about the Moonwalk Project. The goal of project MOONWALK is to develop and test technologies and training procedures for future human missions to Moon and Mars. MOONWALK will focus on astronaut-robot cooperation applied to Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVA) on planetary surfaces.
He also talked about the development of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) and mentioned the requirements as well as the future work on it.
After that Diego talked about Mars500. He said that not the skills but the right group of people was important.

Diego Urbina pointed some of the challenges during the mission – there was no fresh air and Sun, the team was under pressure, they were stressed and isolated. Diego said that he had a lot of time by himself, which was quite challenging. Loss of communication was another challenge. However, he said that exercising helped him feel good. He talked about the experiments they made during the mission and showed pictures of the Experimental green house. This house helped scientists to study the more efficient ways of growing food. The crew tried to celebrate all the holidays, Diego showed some funny pictures and said that he read 27 books during the mission.

In the end Diego Urbina showed the cadets a nice video and said that the best moments during Mars500 were the real EVA simulations.

On 2 November our space cadets presented their prototypes. They were very confident and answered all the questions. Most of the participants demonstrated good teamwork and were inspired to finish the mission in the best way possible. In the end each team received feedback from the mentors which motivated them working harder.
