Introduction to Space Law

Simona Spassova – doctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg gave a lecture on Space law. Yes – space law does exist, and our cadets received a firsthand insight on a space layer job and prerogatives.

She focused their attention to the main challenges that space lawyers are facing – no territorial scope, for example or lack of additional details on liability. She also emphasized the importance of having adequate regulations regarding the future of the humankind in space.

During her talk she introduced the cadets to the core of the space law domain – Space Law Treaties and Principles, composed of five major treaties.  Each of them stresses out the notion that all humankind activity in outer space should be devoted to enhancing the well-being of all countries with an emphasis on promoting international cooperation.

Of course, the key to understanding is to do it in practice – the cadets received an assignment for study with the code name “Titan vs. Perousk”. They had a couple of days to prepare for their first Moot Court!

More information on the Space Law Treaties and principles can be found on the official United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs website.

Stay tuned for more updates to follow on their first steps In Space law!
