Introduction to Satellite link budget

Having Dr. Ing. Marco Lisi – Director at ESA and GSA GNSS as a guest lecturer is always inspiring!

Without any unnecessary talk he went directly to the question – what is a link budget. Having in mind that the question contains the answer “to make a budget on daily basis consists in consecutive subtractions”. After he recalled the basic RF link, he introduced the cadets to a few methods to evaluate the performance of a transmitter and a receiver with only a few formulas involved.

They also became familiar with the concepts of directivity and gain, the uncountable factors that can affect them and of course different error-correcting methods. And those who wanted to make it an extra mile were introduced to Shannon’s theorem – or a way to describe the maximum possible efficiency of error-correcting methods.

Stay tuned for more updates on the cadets’ progress!
